From the Stock Exchange to Westminster, the fantasy of an eventual 'return to normal' is still alive and well. But the economic world as we know it - and the rules that govern it - are over. And few are prepared.

Here, market risk expert Lawrence McDonald unveils the predictive model he developed in the aftermath of Lehman Brothers’ collapse, outlining actionable trading ideas for a radically reshaped economy. Readers will discover:

  • Why inflation will stay near 3-5% for the next decade
  • Why hard assets and rare minerals like lithium and cobalt will outperform growth stocks and passive investment strategies
  • Why America will likely lose its position as a global superpower and holder of the world's premier reserve currency

Rather than merely doomsaying, How to Listen When Markets Speak equips readers to make sense of our current moment, resist reactionary narratives and baseless analysis and pounce on a new investing playbook.
The Politics of Hiding, Invisibility, and Silence - Between Absence and Presence (Paperback): Rhys Dafydd Jones, James... The Politics of Hiding, Invisibility, and Silence - Between Absence and Presence (Paperback)
Rhys Dafydd Jones, James Robinson, Jennifer Turner
R1,276 Discovery Miles 12 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What is absence? What is presence? How are these two phenomena related? Is absence merely not being present? This book examines these and other questions relating to the role of absence and presence in everyday politics. Absence and presence are used as political tools in global events and everyday life to reinforce ideas about space, society, and belonging. The Politics of Hiding, Invisibility, and Silence contains six empirically-focussed chapters introducing case study locations and contexts from around the world. These studies examine how particular groups' relationships with places and spaces are characterized by experiences that are neither wholly present nor wholly absent. Each author demonstrates the variety of ways in which absence and presence are experienced - through silence, forgetting, concealment, distance, and the virtual - and constituted - through visual, aural, and technological. Such accounts also raise philosophical questions about representation and belonging: what must remain absent, and what is allowed to be present? Who decides, and how? Whose voices are heard? Recognizing the complexity of these questions, The Politics of Hiding, Invisibility, and Silence provides a significant contribution in reconciling theorizations of absence with everyday life. This book was published as a special issue of Space and Polity.

Joyce's Dante - Exile, Memory, and Community (Hardcover): James Robinson Joyce's Dante - Exile, Memory, and Community (Hardcover)
James Robinson
R3,049 Discovery Miles 30 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Joyce's engagement with Dante is a crucial component of all of his work. This title reconsiders the responses to Dante in Joyce's work from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man to Finnegans Wake. It presents that encounter as an historically complex and contextually determined interaction reflecting the contested development of Dante's reputation, readership and textuality throughout the nineteenth century. This process produced a 'Dante with a difference', a uniquely creative and unorthodox construction of the poet which informed Joyce's lifelong engagement with such works as the Vita Nuova and the Commedia. Tracing the movement through Joyce's writing on exile as a mode of alienation and charting his growing interest in ideas of community, Joyce's Dante shows how awareness of his changing reading of Dante can alter our understanding of one of the Irish writer's lasting thematic preoccupations.

These enchanting chess pieces consist of elaborately worked walrus ivory and whales' teeth in the form of seated kings and queens, mitred bishops, knights on their mounts, standing warders and pawns in the shape of obelisks. They were found in the vicinity of Uig on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, in mysterious circumstances some time before 11th April 1831. Various stories have evolved to explain why they were concealed there, and how they were discovered. This book takes a lively look at the many theories surrounding the ownership of the pieces, why they were hidden and how exactly they were discovered, and places them in the wider context of the ancient game of chess and secular culture of the Middle Ages.

Alexandre Carvalho, Jose A. Langa, James Robinson
R3,006 Discovery Miles 30 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book treats the theory of attractors for non-autonomous dynamical systems. The aim of the book is to give a coherent account of the current state of the theory, using the framework of processes to impose the minimum of restrictions on the nature of the non-autonomous dependence. The book is intended as an up-to-date summary of the field, but much of it will be accessible to beginning graduate students. Clear indications will be given as to which material is fundamental and which is more advanced, so that those new to the area can quickly obtain an overview, while those already involved can pursue the topics we cover more deeply.

The lectures in this volume were given as part of a NATO Advanced Study Institute From finite to infinite dimensional dynamical systems held at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge, U. K., between 21 August and 1 September 1995. The NATO ASI brought together over sixty young scientists and mathematicians from all over the world to listen to expository talks from leading experts in the field, and also gave them the opportunity to present some of their own results as posters or as lectures. We hope that what they learned both formally and in informal conversations, and the friendships made during their stay in Cambridge, will remain important to them for many years to come. The NATO ASI formed part of a larger six month project at the New ton Institute on the same topic, and many of the participants were able to stay on in Cambridge to attend a Euro-Conference and both hear and contribute to the research in progress which was reported. We are grateful to all the bodies which helped fund these enterprises; principally, of course, NATO, but the European Union, CNRS (France) and the London Mathe matical Society all made contributions which allowed participants to stay on for the research conference and the Leverhume Trust funded the visits of participants from the former Soviet Union."

This edited volume addresses the root causes of Africa's persistent poverty through an investigation of its longue duree history. It interrogates the African past through disease and demography, institutions and governance, African economies and the impact of the export slave trade, colonialism, Africa in the world economy, and culture's influence on accumulation and investment. Several of the chapters take a comparative perspective, placing Africa's developments aside other global patterns. The readership for this book spans from the informed lay reader with an interest in Africa, academics and undergraduate and graduate students, policy makers, and those in the development world."
